There is an endless list of brilliant people, making differences in the world and their own environments. And there is also the foolish who God chosen to shame the wise. Be it scholar or fisherman, God wanted us to base our worth on Him. God made men in His image.
Perhaps God, through his atonement on the cross wanted to say something like this - "to affirm your self-image is to affirm mine. Therefore, I will die and make sure you based your life's value on me."
