Solomon was given wisdom and richly blessed by God. 1 Kings 10 mentioned that there was no one as wise as him. Yet in 1 Kings 11, Solomon turned from God. His affection towards his many foreign women turned him towards false gods. Make no mistake here. The wisest of the wisest, King Solomon made a foolish mistake, one of the worse mistakes.
Knowing reason alone, knowing how to deal with matters in a way which pleases God alone cannot really change us or keep us from falling away from God. Our desires play a crucial role as well. In the case of Solomon, his desire was for his many foreign women and he compromised his faith for them.
In the end, the struggle with sin is a struggle with desires.
The desire to honor God VS the sinful desires of the flesh.
The desire for God VS the desire for the world.
The desire for delayed gratification VS the desire for instant gratification.
That's why renewing our mind and praying our our souls are so important.
Let us not overlook that.
