Recently I have made some observations which seem disturbing. It might be because my life is rather plain compared to the rest but I think there are some valid points which I should bring out right here.
With all that events, but...
Our lives are surrounded with events and hence, we need to be wary not to involve ourselves primarily because we think this event will define us and make us special in anyway (knowing that we are already special in the eyes of God). A fulfilling life is one filled with experiences with God in the centre of your life, NOT a life aimed to be maxed out with events. In the world where competitions are ubiquitous ( - from comparing grades to experience to how much things you can complete within your holidays), we must be ready to be the losers.
What I am going to say next will sound cliche (*some text removed here*) : life is more than paper (-resume, certificates, money...etc). Life is more than events. Because we know this love which is better than life and this love enrich and complete our lives, not with tangible cash or resources from the world, but with unlimited grace from God.
Consider the small things
God has endowed us with natural talents and spiritual gifts. The current Gen-Y of teenagers are generally well presented with opportunities to pursue higher (and higher) education. Subconsciously, some of us will want to do tasks or work which matches our capabilities. Perhaps God intended you for bigger things. You were probably encouraged to dream big and to make a difference in the world. Sadly, chasing idealistic notions of bettering yourself or mankind can actually direct us away from our calling in Christ. How so? The desire or ambition to do the big things often block or blind us from the willingness to attempt the small things.
While many may think of Mother Teresa as a woman who did big things, what she did was a actually a series of small things. What she did was to treat every one like she was treating Christ, to love them like Jesus would. She bathed and took care of people, which did not require much intellect or capabilities.
Now I share something which my friend said a few weeks ago.
"The thing about being salt and light is that you should not be at a bright place, but in a dark and unexpected place, shine for God."
What this implies, is that when everyone is going gaga over the big things, you go and do the small things. When others come to know what you have done there will be two reactions. One, think that you are foolish (and you should be foolish in the eyes of men). Two, realise how much God is worth to you that allowed you to humble yourself (like Jesus) to do something no 'normal' person will think or be willing to do. And there, a chance to share the gospel with them. Yes? :D
May we not belittle the 'small' things in life and our motivations be Christ-Centred. God help us all.
